Everyone needs a why. Why do you do what you do? What adventures are you pursuing and why? If you find yourself struggling to discover your why in life and don’t know why, this post is for you.
If you don’t have a why, it can be challenging to find motivation when times get hard. If you realize you are doing something that doesn’t align with your why, why don’t you pivot?
If you find your why to be based on ego, external gratification, or something that will not make you happy, why don’t you stop doing it and create a new why and a new path? I know this one from personal experience!
I have spent years studying, investigating, and exploring my why.
In all honesty, my why changes during different seasons of my life. Though my core why is always with me!
Life can be challenging and there are many unknowns, just know that we’re all in this together in seeking and developing our purpose.
Take a deep breath, smile that you have the gift of life, and start treating yourself with a bit more love and grace.
I believe that there are many whys that direct our lives, each with different levels of intimacy and importance.
I am going to share with you 3 of my whys, and how each shapes the life I live and the gifts I give.
Hopefully, this helps give you a little bit more clarity and wonder about creating your why; whether it’s for you, your family, or your business.
This post is all about Finding My Why. What’s Yours?
Why 1. Closest To My Heart: Family
Just know that everyone may have a different why and levels of importance for each. This is completely beautiful, and I think it’s incredible how different each of us are. We are all absolutely special and gifted.
My first why is my family.
This is the why that makes my heart beat and feel fully alive.
Through time and tested experience, this why resonates most deeply within my heart and gives me purpose and mission daily.
I live for my family. I often think how incredibly blessed I am to have such an incredible wife and daughter. They make me feel like the luckiest man alive, and I wouldn’t be who I am without them.
Outside of this, is the insanely beautiful family that we have in our parents, siblings, cousins, friends, and people of the world. Without fellow humans, this life experience would not be what it could be. I personally have a strong affection for all the people who help me love and appreciate my life at a whole different level.
That is why for me, my first why is my family; I consider my extended family and friends a part of my family as well.
What why is closest to your heart?
Why 2. Closest To My Soul: Faith
My faith in a higher power helps to ground and direct my focus on a daily basis.
My faith is the water that gives nourishment and growth to my body, heart, mind, and soul. It replenishes me when I am at my weakest, and restores me when I need a good reset.
I wouldn’t be who I am without my faith in God, and His love drives me to be the best man I can be.
I find so much purpose and joy in glorifying God, and as a result, He is a major part of my life.
I can’t not live for God because of all the gifts and blessings that He has given me, including my family, purpose, and life as we know it. As a result, He is the why that is closest to my soul.
What why is closest to your soul or human spirit?
Why 3. Closest To My Passion: Purpose
Finding things that you are passionate about doing and those who you are passionate about serving is HUGE!
It brings me a lot of meaning to love and serve my family, as well as those around me, using my particular skills and talents.
I have worked many jobs, and have learned that the jobs I love best, are those that best align with my why.
I firmly believe that discovering and developing your gifts and talents can bring you a lot of joy and purpose. Is there anything you want to pursue or discover about yourself so that you can enjoy your work more, bring joy into all of the little things, and pursue your BIG WHY wholeheartedly?
As we spend most of our day working, studying, etc., I think it is incredibly important to experiment and explore working toward something that has a lot of meaning behind it. Something that we are passionate about.
For me, this is currently in writing Future Love Story. This dream comes from deep within, giving me the gift of joy in pursuing and sharing my gifts with the world. I love using my imagination to tell stories and bring people wonder and love, and this gives me the pleasure and purpose that I need to create something bigger than myself. A gift greater than wealth, purpose.
If you are a car designer and your why is supporting your family by using your gifts as a dreamer and achiever, go for it! Your family can fuel you to work harder and with more discipline, knowing that your work helps to support your beautiful family. Even on the hard days, you can always go back to your why.
What why is your greatest passion?
Crafting Your Why
Now that I have shared three of my whys, I want to share how I use them to direct my life toward its highest purpose and fulfillment.
For me, my three whys are as follows:
Why 1. To live for my family. To constantly strive to love, adore, and serve for their well-being and goodness.
Why 2. To love God above all things.
Why 3. To use my gifts of imagination, writing, and story to develop a better world and self, for all in the universe.
If you look closely at my whys, you will see how I crafted a mission statement for Future Love Story, our why.
“Future Love Story lives to bring joy and love to families all over the galaxy, to glorify God in all things, and to create a better and brighter future for all in the universe.”
Combine your top 3 whys to develop your own mission or vision statement.
Need More Help? Start With Why.
What got me thinking more about why in the first place?
It actually came from the brilliant book ‘Start With Why’ by Simon Sinek.
I know this can be read as a business book, as it discusses many examples from different companies and how they use their why to fuel what they do.
Though I personally found it incredibly helpful to better review and reexamine my own life.
Why am I pursuing the certificates that I do? Why do I care about checking social media so often? Why is my day scheduled around these tasks? Why is my morning routine what it is?
These are questions that I have been reflecting on. And the life change has been remarkable! I have redirected my priorities and will continue to tweak my day and life to better suit my greater purpose.
Thank you, Simon, for your remarkable pursuit of discovery and growth, it has been helpful for me!
Ready To Start? Why Not!
I know that there are many ways to discover your why. This is just one way that helped me reflect on where I focus my time and priorities in life.
Do you have any ways that help you develop your why?
What has been most helpful for you on your journey in finding your why?
Why do you do what you do?
I’m curious if we all discovered and made use of our why, what an even more beautiful world this would truly be.
Have a brilliant day, and stay true to who you are.
For only you can live your why better than someone else can.
Thanks!
Lozza Love,
Michael Wittorp
